For our undergraduate students, Movement & Narrative is a two-week mini-module at Level 4 (ie the first year of undergraduate studies) exploring the basics of creativity, storytelling, design and even acting. Even in their second year, our students are already collaborating together and working on award-winning films such as Planet Mars and Golden Acorn. Humor is the main driving force of comedy films. It also works as a platform for web development. This year the tutor for both modules, CR4002 and PR4001, was character designer & visual development artist Steven Sole. The principal software we teach is Maya, and the animation tutor is animator and industry veteran Marc Stevenson. The module builds up to an industry brief – creating a “health pickup” for a game. This 4 week games module introduces students to the basics of creating 3D assets for games (using Maya), and integrating them into the game engine – Unreal Engine. The idea is to get used to the Maya interface before formal teaching begins.
